What you can expect

Amritsar- The land of faith and food can be well called the culinary capital of India. From sweet to the savoury, the fried and the roasted - the city has a lot on the menu. A visit to Amritsar invariably includes two things—paying your respects at the Golden Temple, and gorging on all the delicacies the city dishes up. The locals love the street food in Amritsar, and the city is swarming with street-side vendors selling the freshest, hottest and richest versions of everything from a refreshing glass of lassi and sugary, sweet halwa, to buttery paranthas and spicy gravy.

Here’s our list of rich Punjabi delicacies in all their fatty splendour—so get your hands dirty, and eat to your heart’s content. You’ll probably pack on a couple of extra kilos, but we guarantee it’ll be worth the weight.

  • Amritsari Kulcha: The choice of breakfast in Amritsar also happens to be the most famous dish to be originated in the city—Amritsari kulcha.
  • Chole Puri: If you wish to try another Punjabi breakfast staple, head over to Kanha Sweets. The puris are fried in pure ghee, and served with chole and a tangy potato curry.
  • Lassi: From mango to kesar, the lassi at Ahuja’s, available in a variety of flavours, is an Amritsari favourite.
  • Kesar Da Dhaba: Originally founded in Pakistan's Punjab province, this 100-year-old eatery relocated to Amritsar after Partition. Since then it has been serving up delicious paratha thalis and silver-leaf-toppedfirni in small clay bowls.
  • Amritsari fish tikka: Amritsar is not all about vegetarian food. The fish tikkas here are fresh, perfectly spiced and sprinkled with masala. Another must try here is the fried sangara (fried fish), enjoyed best with beer.
  • Tandoori Roast Chicken: A stone’s throw from Makhan, Beera Chicken House is another must-visit for non-vegetarian food. The whiff of roasted chicken being basted with pure ghee lingers around even before you reach here.
  • Jalebi amd Gulab Jamun/Kulfas: Kulfas, the ‘big brother’ of the kulfi, are made with a layer of phirni, topped with scoops of kulfi and falooda, some gond (edible gum), and a dash of syrup and kewra (rose water). It is finished with some rabri. An easy-to-miss rundown shop, Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala has only two things on its menu—gulab jamuns and jalebis.
