We recently took McKean Studio to Melbourne<\/a> for the winter instalment of The Finders Keepers Market, an event supporting independent designers and makers, and held twice a year at the beautiful Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton. As far as \u2018working weekends\u2019 go, it doesn\u2019t get better than this. While we were in town, we hit a few of our favourite spots and discovered a couple of new places for you to bookmark on your next visit.<\/p>\n

EAT<\/h2>\n

Ombra Salumi Bar<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hands down the best meal of our Melbourne stay, discovered through a combination of laziness and exhaustion. We wanted to try somewhere close to our hotel, and open for an early dinner. All of our boxes were checked with Ombra, and then some. \u2018Aperitivo\u2019 takes place from 4.30-6.30 each day, and then the dinner menu kicks off. Salumi, Cicchetti, Formaggio and Pizza, and rounded out with a solid dessert menu. The staff are genuine and lovely, and the service is top notch. Try the Diavola pizza (the chilli is the perfect kick) and don\u2019t miss the salted caramel profiteroles! Legend has it the first night Ombra opened there was supposed to be a cheesecake on the dessert menu \u2013 which was promptly dropped on the floor. One of the chef\u2019s whipped up a batch of his salted caramel profiteroles, saving the day, and they haven\u2019t left the menu since! \nJimmy Grants<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you visit Melbourne, you have to make an effort to try some Greek food \u2013\u00a0and a very late night kebab doesn\u2019t count. George Calombaris\u2019s souvlaki bar \u2018Jimmy Grants\u2019 (named for the Australian rhyming slang for immigrants) is no-fuss but done to perfection, setting the benchmark for your future souvlaki experiences very, very high. Try the \u2018Mr Papadopoulos\u2019 (it\u2019s fun to say when ordering) and get a serve of the chips \u2013\u00a0the garlic oil, feta, and oregano combination is worth the visit alone. Eat a Scroll<\/strong><\/p>\n

The often forgotten, humble scroll is back in fine form at Melbourne\u2019s first scroll boutique. With flavours like Chocolate & Caramel, Peanut Butter & Banana and of course the classic Cream Cheese, Pop Up Scroll makes it hard to decide! Serving good coffee, and miniature options of each scroll flavour, it\u2019s a great spot to stop in for a morning break. Eat a Scroll<\/a><\/em>,<\/em> 76 Smith Street, Collingwood<\/em><\/p>\n

Photo Booth, Flinders Street<\/strong><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a fun Photo Booth<\/a> just near Flinders Street Station, and it\u2019s become our Melbourne tradition to get a strip done whenever we\u2019re in town. $5, correct change only, and a very sweet black and white memento to take back home with you.<\/p>\n

Signed & Numbered<\/strong><\/p>\n

An expansive range of limited edition prints await in Signed & Numbered. From both emerging and established artists (local and international), there\u2019s an easy and affordable gift option for everyone in-store. Just down the end of Degraves Street, it\u2019s the easiest shopping you can do and a sweet space to spend some time in, exploring new and very talented artists. The Finders Keepers Market<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re in Melbourne over the weekend that The Finders Keepers happens to fall on, make an effort to stop in for some shopping! A huge event with over 250 independent art and design stalls, a vintage emporium, food trucks and more, it\u2019s a great event that only happens twice a year in Melbourne! Stallholders travel from around the country for the event, so you can expect the cream of the crop. The next event happens on the first weekend in October at The Royal Exhibition Building, so it might be one to bookmark and get started early on your Christmas shopping.
