Good on us.<\/p>\n<p>I usually choose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Italy.d86.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Italy<\/a>. I\u2019ll go there annually if they\u2019ll continue to have me, despite my terrible pronunciation of \u201cgrazie\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Some reasons include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Carbs<\/li>\n<li>Fashion<\/li>\n<li>Negronis<\/li>\n<li>Ricotta cheesecake<\/li>\n<li>Swimming off rocks and <em>no sand anywhere<\/em><\/li>\n<li>No judgment when ordering a bowl of pasta, then pizza<\/li>\n<li>Friendly, warm, welcoming Italians<\/li>\n<li>Everyone looks great because everyone wears sunglasses always<\/li>\n<li>Carbs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like most people, I\u2019ve done the classic Italian hotspots: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Venice.d179981.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venice<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Positano.d4330.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Positano<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Sicily.d6048323.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sicily<\/a> and, of course, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Athens.d178231.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Athens<\/a>. Here are some of my favourite things to do\/see\/eat\/visit in the aforementioned hotspots.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/blog-img\/11_2016\/12751_34_HT' \/><\/p>\n<h2>Taormina, Sicily<\/h2>\n<p>We stayed in Taormina, on the beach, rather than up in town. But with a cable car swinging its way between the town (all the food\/shops and most of the hotels) and beach (a handful of hotels and restaurants) all day, both options are good. Have a fancy, view-soaked drink at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Messina-Hotels-Belmond-Grand-Hotel-Timeo.h889634.Hotel-Information?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grand Hotel Taormina<\/a>, and <em>outstanding<\/em> aperitivo at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Timoleone-Caf%C3%A9-Taormina-Restaurant-Wine-Cocktail-Bar-497650550317862\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Timoleone<\/a>. Have your (daily) granita at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BamBar-Taormina-291496720867523\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bam Bam bar<\/a>, swim at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Isola-Bella.d6182934.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isola Bella<\/a>, and make a day trip to Noto and Syracuse if time permits. Definitely eat lunch (or ideally stay) at Country House Villadorata, just outside of Noto, if you\u2019re roaming. It served up the finest meal of my trip.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/blog-img\/11_2016\/12751_32_HT' \/><\/p>\n<h2>Portofino<\/h2>\n<p>Portofino could never be accused of being cheap, but that\u2019ll happen when you\u2019re a) tiny, b) breathtaking, and c) overrun with super yachts and tourists. But it\u2019s <em>so<\/em> lovely! Pop on your best boaty pastels and make the trip already! Head up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Portofino-Golfo-Tigullio-Hotels-Belmond-Hotel-Splendido.h140.Hotel-Information?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hotel Splendido<\/a> (often called the best hotel in the world, and after staying there, I\u2019m a believer) for a sunset cocktail, and when the bill arrives suck it up and file it in your \u201cLifelong Memories\u201d folder. Buy some cheese, wine and crackers in town and have a picnic in the surrounding national park; have a casual lunch at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tavernadelmarinaio.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Taverna del Marinaio<\/a>, or walk away from the packed main square to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Lisolotto\/135807686555743\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L\u2019Isolotto<\/a> for some of the best pizza of your goddamn life. There\u2019s a small, protected swimming area just below Splendido where locals swim laps (scene of one of the most magical rock swims of my life), or Paraggi beach just outside town.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/blog-img\/11_2016\/12751_26_HT' \/><\/p>\n<h2>Venice<\/h2>\n<p>We all need to go to Venice at least once\/100 times. There are no street names or, um, streets, really (canals instead, <em>OMG<\/em> how quaint), and a heavy suitcase will be your downfall \u2013 so pack light and smart. I was there for Biennale and it was HEAVING, but terrific fun. I was young and single so just popped my trainers on each day and wandered. But despite a lack of funds, I was no dummy: I knew some torta meringata classica and a peach bellini (it was invented there) at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harrysbarvenezia.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harry\u2019s Bar<\/a> was mandatory, and to have a wine and snack at the centuries-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Cantina-Do-Mori\/129503543767439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cantina Do Mori<\/a>. When I <em>next<\/em> go, I\u2019ll be staying at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Venice-Hotels-Ca-Maria-Adele.h1158280.Hotel-Information?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ca Maria Adele<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Venice-Hotels-The-Gritti-Palace.h27226.Hotel-Information?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Gritti Palace<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/blog-img\/11_2016\/12751_31_HT' \/><\/p>\n<h2>Positano and Capri<\/h2>\n<p>I wished to return to Positano this year, but it\u2019s not <em>super<\/em> young-child friendly due to its several billion steps. So we switched to Sicily. But I\u2019ll be back. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Amalfi-Coast.d180060.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Amalfi Coast<\/a> is movie-set pretty, the perfect summer jaunt and wonderfully unsnobby. Accommodation ranges from wildly glamorous to chic, rustic and family-run; take your pick. Ask any Aussie for their Positano list and they\u2019ll tell you one thing: catch the red fish boat from the main beach, then go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daadolfo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Da Adolfo<\/a> for lunch and to laze on a sunbed and swim. <em>Do it. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty hard to have a bad meal in Positano, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbmariagrazia.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maria Grazia<\/a> (vegetarian pasta heaven) and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latagliata.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> La Tagliata<\/a> (all home grown, no menu, just what\u2019s <em>fresh<\/em>) are foodie favourites. A fancy sunset drink at the magnificent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Amalfi-Coast-Hotels-Il-San-Pietro-Di-Positano.h535991.Hotel-Information?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Il San Pietro<\/a> just out of town is worth it, and <em>not<\/em> just because G. Clooney chooses to stay here, how dare you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Capri.d9469.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Capri<\/a> (think St Tropez, but less\u2026 French) is a quick ferry ride away, and quite frankly, non-negotiable. (Ravello likewise.) Go in July for breathtaking designer sales, and catch the boat around to the iconic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fontelina-capri.com\/en\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fontelina Beach Club <\/a>to enjoy a long Spritz and Sangria-soaked lunch (and swim). It\u2019s <em>magic<\/em>. Ditto the gelato and homemade waffle cones at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/capri.gelateriabuonocore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buonocore<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/images.trvl-media.com\/media\/content\/expaus\/images\/blog-img\/11_2016\/12751_35_HT' \/><\/p>\n<h2>Florence<\/h2>\n<p>There is good reason <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Florence.d179893.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florence<\/a> is one of the most popular cities in the world: it\u2019s awfully pretty, it\u2019s riddled with history and romance, and it caters to all budgets\/goals\/shoe sizes. Within greater <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Tuscany.d601686.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tuscany<\/a>, I highly recommend an (extended) stay in the small but big town of Lucca, with a couple of days at Forte de Marmi (you can ferry up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Cinque-Terre.d180063.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cinque Terre<\/a> for the day), at least a day in mediaeval little San Gimignano and, of course, some time in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\/Siena.d6047850.Destination-Travel-Guides?brandcid=blog.listopedia.italy101.zoefoster_241116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Siena<\/a>.
