Anthony Bianco\u2019s trip to Italy lifted the lid on a few Italian truths<\/em><\/p>\n

1. Your grandparents\u2019 backyard is full of fruit trees<\/h2>\n

Old habits die hard! When I was growing up, I used to wonder why my\u00a0grandparent\u2019s back yard was full of fruit trees and vegetables and all of the Anglo\u00a0families only had lawn. When I went to Italy I realised they\u2019d just transplanted their\u00a0ways of sourcing organic, seasonal produce from their backyard, straight into the\u00a0kitchen for a tasty meal.<\/p>\n

2. Alcohol is medicinal<\/h2>\n

My great aunt who lived to 98 told me that the secret to a long, happy and healthy\u00a0life is to drink 500 ml of red wine a day, and have a dash of grappa (a rocket fuel\u00a0spirit distilled from grapes) in your coffee in the morning. Sounds good to me!<\/p>\n

3. Mangia, mangia, mangia!<\/h2>\n

Meals were a 7 course affair, and every course was accompanied with the one Italian\u00a0word I could understand \u2013 \u2018Mangia, mangia, mangia!\u2019 (Eat, Eat, Eat)!<\/p>\n

4. Crazy drivers are a way of life<\/h2>\n

I have a theory \u2013 the amount of religious paraphernalia on a car\u2019s rear view mirror is\u00a0a reliable indicator of how crazy the drivers are. The more crucifixes or rosary beads\u00a0wrapped around the mirror, the more dangerous the driving is. I tested this theory\u00a0in Italy, and I was proven right!<\/p>\n

5. Olives come from the garage, not the deli<\/h2>\n

When I was in Italy<\/a> we\u2019d go to some guy\u2019s garage to watch olives being pressed into\u00a0olive oil. The smell is wonderful. Or we\u2019d stop by a local winery where people go\u00a0straight to the vat to fill up their 25 and 50 litre containers so they have an ample\u00a0supply for lunches and dinners. There\u2019s a more community feel to life.<\/p>\n
