Food is such an important part of the local culture and the city has always been famous for its food tourism. People come from all over the world to visit the many Michelin Star restaurants as well as the cheap-eats from local street vendors and everything in between.

As a lifestyle blogger I pretty much eat and drink for a living so I’ve tried places all over the Hong Kong food spectrum – mostly great but let’s face it there are also some not so good ones. While it is relatively easy these days to find good restaurant recommendations and avoid the tourist traps, I’m all about the good food experiences. Here are a few places I keep going back to again and again for that little something extra.

For the best dumplings

Nope, you won’t find them at a local dim sum house. In my opinion the best dumpling experience in Hong Kong is found at Ho Lee Fook. Served up by Chef Jowett Yu (previously of Mr. Wong and Ms. G’s in Sydney) using his grandma’s secret recipe. Try Mom’s ‘mostly cabbage, a little bit of pork’ dumplings, but don’t be surprised when they’re the most meaty, delicious dumplings you’ve ever had! If you’re after a more local experience, I suggest trying Lok Cha Tea House – the best vegetarian Dim Sum and set in an old colonial house in Hong Kong Park. What more could you want? Ho Lee Fook, 1 Elgin St, Central, Lok Cha Tea House, K.S Lo Gallery, Hong Kong Park

Fine dining

If you’re after a really special night out, Fish and Meat in Lan Kwai Fong is where it’s at. The interiors are stunning (although I’m a little bias as my boyfriend did them), they serve my favourite cocktail in the entire city – The Farmhouse Jam – not to mention the incredible food. My favourite dish is the Duck Egg Ravioli but everything on the menu is good! It’s a little pricey but well worth the amazing dining experience. For a weekend getaway, you can’t miss Limewood in Repulse Bay (also designed by my boyfriend!), which has the perfect beach vibe you’ll want on a Sunday afternoon. Don’t miss their Vietnamese Pork Neck Salad and the Salted Caramel Expresso Martinis. I love the grilled octopus on a stick and the curry fried fish balls. Perfect for filling up on your way to the ladies market or Sneaker St. There are also some pretty special fresh juice stalls with mango and sago juice (sago is similar to a fine tapioca) and pineapple and coconut juice. If you’re feeling brave, try the stinky tofu (yes that stinky smell is actually delicious food!). Fa Yuen St, Mong Kok, Kowloon

Coffee in Sheung Wan

Coffee culture is relatively new to Hong Kong but there are a few hidden spots that have opened up in Sheung Wan recently. Common Ground, Corner Kitchen Cafe and Barista Jam are a few local spots to get your caffeine hit for the day. If you’re more of a tea lover, you can’t go past Teakha in Sheung Wan, coffee lovers should try the Yin & Yang – a Hong Kong special where teams mixed with coffee. Common Ground, G/F, 19 Shing Wong Street, Central, Corner Kitchen Cafe, 226 Hollywood Rd, Sheung Wan, Barista Jam, 126-128 Jervois St, Sheung Wan, Teakha, Shop B, 18 Tai Ping Shan Street, Sheung Wan

The Hong Kong brunch experience

Hong Kong Brunches are a bit of an institution. My picks are Zuma for a Japanese style brunch and a dessert platter that will blow your mind, and The Continental in Pacific Place. I just can’t get over the old world glamour of the Bloody Mary drinks cart that gets wheeled past your table – yes please!
