How do you holiday? Whether it\u2019s a fly and flop break at a beach resort or a full on family adventure on the other side of the world, there\u2019s plenty of different ways to have a holiday. Expedia\u2019s<\/a> State of the Nation report asked 2,500 Australians about the way they travel and the results will surprise you. Here\u2019s our top 15 fun facts about how Aussies travel.<\/p>\n

1. Aussies are travelling younger and further afield<\/h2>\n

Currently more than half of the nation\u2019s youngsters aged 17 years and under own a passport. That\u2019s a big shift from the average adult, who received their first passport aged 17.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Babies on planes<\/h2>\n

Don\u2019t worry, you won\u2019t be alone if you\u2019re taking your baby on board. Almost a quarter of 0-23 month old babies already own a passport.<\/p>\n

3. Beach is best<\/h2>\n

Families with babies and toddlers prefer beach holidays.<\/p>\n

4. The Gold Coast wins<\/h2>\n

QLD\u2019s theme park capital is the number one destination for families with kids of all ages. Expedia’s year-round Gold Coast accommodation specials<\/a> makes travelling with kids even more affordable!<\/p>\n

5. Gap year<\/h2>\n

Get ready to watch your kids fly the coop. 18-24 year olds are more likely than any other age group to have taken a domestic or international holiday over this time period.<\/p>\n

6. Food and fashion<\/h2>\n

From famous restaurants to cutting edge designers, Aussies care about where they\u2019re going to eat and shop when they hop off a plane, spending 7.5 days researching where to do both while on holiday. Australian women spend more than one week working out where to shop when planning a holiday.<\/p>\n

7. On the bucket list<\/h2>\n

34% of Aussies want to visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World, 31% want to holiday like a VIP and the other 31% want to try a luxury cruise before they die. And then there\u2019s the 24% of young Aussies, 18-24, who have joining the Mile High Club on their bucket list.<\/p>\n

8. Shopaholics<\/h2>\n

Aussies from VIC are most likely to include an overnight stopover so they can shop. That\u2019s right. You know who you are!<\/p>\n

9. Keeping up with the Joneses<\/h2>\n

Sick of seeing your Facebook feed full of fantastic-looking holidays? Aussies from NSW and ACT most agree they try to outdo their friends when planning where to go for their next holiday. Sydneysiders are the worst. Tahiti anyone?<\/p>\n

10. Sport fanatics<\/h2>\n

We all know Melbournians love their sport but it turns out they\u2019re willing to go further than the MCG to see a match. They\u2019re most likely to plan a holiday around a major sporting event.<\/p>\n

11. Social butterflies<\/h2>\n

Victorians are most influenced by social media when planning a holiday.<\/p>\n

12. Slow and steady<\/h2>\n

Well known for a slower pace of living, residents of Adelaide take the longest time to plan a trip. They spend 53 days planning. Sydneysiders are the most decisive, taking 44 days to get things sorted.<\/p>\n

13. Australia vs New Zealand<\/h2>\n

No, we\u2019re not talking about the football. Aussies have been overseas in the past two years less than their Kiwi counterparts. Must be because of all those Kiwis coming over here!<\/p>\n

14. Battle of the sexes<\/h2>\n

Not surprisingly, women care more about good shopping opportunities than men when choosing a destination. Here\u2019s a curb ball \u2013 men are more likely to care about festivals and famous restaurants than women when picking their destination. Oh, sporting events are important too.<\/p>\n

15. What would you give up?<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s a tough one. More than half of Aussies would be prepared to give up alcohol for 3 months rather than their holiday. After alcohol is chocolate and TV. And then sex. If you thought that was interesting, Aussies are even less willing to give up Internet.
