Faces sticky from ice cream, the smell of sunscreen and sleeping to the sound of the waves were all parts of my childhood. Our time at Eco Beach brought these memories flooding back. I\u2019ve struggled for weeks with how to write about Eco Beach, because it truly is a place unlike any other I\u2019ve ever experienced.<\/p>\n

Built in the nineties and demolished by Cyclone Rosita in 2000, the owners rebuilt, this time around taking out palm trees and re-establishing the natural flora. The result is a resort that is less about bright blue pools and bongo drums playing over loud speakers and more about getting back to the peace and quiet of this secret spot in Western Australia.<\/p>\n

Getting there<\/h2>\n

Our journey began at Broome airport, where a little hanger held a tiny plane. Eco Beach is accessible with a 1.5 hour drive from Broome<\/a>, but the moment we rise up and are cruising over the bay, there\u2019s no other way we\u2019d travel. The water glittered like a milky blue gem below us as the sun set.<\/p>\n

From the moment the air-conditioned bus picks you up at the resort\u2019s private runway; to the fresh iced tea and cold towels upon arrival at reception, the hospitality at Eco Beach is second to none. It feels like you\u2019re coming home. Even the resort manager Josie and her husband welcome you with open arms. That sense of community from childhood beachside holidays? I found it at Eco Beach.<\/p>\n

A room with a view<\/h2>\n

Guests can choose from two types of accommodation. If you\u2019re going all out, I recommend the ocean view villas, which have stunning 180 degree views over the resort\u2019s private beach, or the garden view villas (which Mr. Polka and I stayed in). Both have living area, basic kitchen and fully equipped bathroom.<\/p>\n

Option number two is the resort\u2019s own luxury tents. These aren\u2019t the sand ridden, rain soaked tents of our childhood \u2013 they have their own private decks, king sized beds, ensuite bathrooms and even have power. Eco Beach has pioneered such amazing tents that they\u2019re actually available for sale. Communal barbecues provide plenty of options to kick back.
\n<\/p>\n

Food for honeymooners<\/h2>\n

If cooking for yourself on your honeymoon isn\u2019t your style, because it certainly isn\u2019t mine, then Jack\u2019s Restaurant is your best option. Set in the resort\u2019s main pavilion, it\u2019s open every day all day for three meals plus drinks and ice cream. The open air pavilion houses the guest lounge, activities desk, reception and the resort\u2019s private infinity pool, so the view for breakfast? Not half bad!<\/p>\n

The food is delicious, the quality equal to many Melbourne fine dining restaurants. My must try? The trio of ice creams served up for dessert (including my favourite, bacon and egg ice cream).<\/p>\n

All in the name<\/h2>\n

Eco Beach derives its name from the hundreds of eco friendly undertakings the team undertake to create as small a footprint as possible. The resort itself sets a standard for ecologically sustainable tourism across the world. The villas are all solar powered, waste water is recycled with a micro-organic waste water system, the accommodation uses eco friendly materials, kitchen staff harvest herbs and vegetables from their own garden, guests are incentivised not to have their room serviced frequently \u2013 even the toiletries provided in the bathrooms are eco friendly.<\/p>\n

What to do<\/h2>\n

There is as much or as little to do as you wish. Most guests\u2019 rise early to take advantage of the epic sunrises (which don\u2019t quite rival the Western Australian sunsets, but with a private beach are something worth waking up for) and a free yoga class is offered in the open-air pavilion every morning at 7am. Stake out one of the hammock pavilions that dot the sand, kick back on your villa or tent\u2019s deck, dip in the pool and the ocean or wander along the resort\u2019s soft white sand beach. You can even book a massage in the resort\u2019s onsite day spa.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re energetic, there are a multitude of experiences here, and we\u2019re not talking the usual kayak hire or tennis game (though water sports are available!). Every night at sunset, guests are invited to join staff for a sundowner and to learn of the next day\u2019s available activities. Think deep-sea fishing, mud treatments on the beach (with champagne), guided bush walks down the coastline or to the local watering holes, turtle and whale tours, even tours with traditional landowner Dominic Matsumoto.<\/p>\n

This is the experience that makes Eco Beach unforgettable. The resort is set on Yawuru Aboriginal land, Yardoogarra being the traditional Aboriginal name for Eco Beach. After hopping into Dom\u2019s 4WD, esky laden with drinks, we\u2019re taken to his grandmother\u2019s birthplace. Hearing stories of Dominic\u2019s childhood and being guided through traditional rituals was a privilege that helped us understand something different about this land.<\/p>\n

Our night ended scrambling down a cliff like mountain goats to a stunning beach. The 360 degree views of the sunset surrounded by fiery red ochre cliffs will not be easily forgotten. It was truly one of those moments in life that had a profound effect and will remain etched in my memory.
\n<\/p>\n

Weddings<\/h2>\n

All of this makes Eco Beach sound like a pretty perfect place for a wedding doesn\u2019t it? So it\u2019s lucky that Eco Beach is set up perfectly to cater for \u2018I do\u2019s\u2019! Having the resort as isolated as it is means that the scope is yours. If you want a midnight dance party on the beach, they can work with you to create it! Arrive by helicopter? That\u2019s an option too! Want to book out the entire resort for your guests? Tick that box! There are even stories of opera singers on cliffs, four poster beds on private beaches for honeymooners and thousands of lit candles in traditional Kimberley black bags lighting up a celebration.<\/p>\n

The resort can accommodate 20-120 guests and with a multitude of backdrops and spaces, can make your wedding something you and your guests will never forget.<\/p>\n

Eco Beach is a truly special place, not because of the luxury and the incredible sights, but because it has a sense of returning you back to the calm and serenity of a beautiful beachside holiday. If you\u2019re looking for tropical music blaring from speakers around manufactured pools, planted palm trees and a sense that you could be anywhere in the world, this isn\u2019t the place for you. But if you\u2019re eager to have an experience that combines relaxation with the beautiful experiences Australia\u2019s Western Australian coastline has to offer, then Eco Beach will welcome you with open arms.<\/p>\n
