The Viktualienmarkt was created in 1807, when King Maximilian I decreed that the food markets of Munich needed to be moved from the Marienplatz to a larger area. The name for the market comes from the old German word Vicktualien, which means “victuals” or “provisions”. The Viktualienmarkt is still the go-to spot for Munich residents to stock up on a wide variety of provisions, both local and exotic.
The Viktualienmarkt’s primary function is still that of a food market. The numerous vendors sell everything that a chef could want, including fruits, vegetables, fish, meats, dairy products, spices and more. The market places special emphasis on stocking ingredients that are hard to find elsewhere. Wander through the 140 stalls and stores and sample local cuisine. Be sure to taste the Bavarian delicacy leberkäse, which is a type of meatloaf that is usually served on a bun.
At the centre of the market is a large maypole, which has been painted with the Bavarian colours of blue and white. In olden times, maypoles were adorned with emblems that signified which crafts and trades were important to the local region. These emblems, which protrude from the maypole like branches from a tree, are still visible. Visit Viktualienmarkt on May 1 to see the traditional May Day celebrations. The market also hosts other traditional events throughout the year, like the “dance of the market women”, which is held on Shrove Tuesday.
Viktualienmarkt’s beer garden can seat several hundred people and is regarded as one of Munich’s most important beer gardens. In Bavaria, it is customary for patrons to bring their own food to beer gardens to enjoy with their purchased beverages. Snack on cheese and sausage from the Viktualienmarkt as you sip on a refreshing brew.
The Viktualienmarkt is open every day of the week except Sundays. For an additional culinary treat, go to the Schrannenhalle, which is a former granary that has been converted into a well-lit hall filled with cafés and delicatessens. Both destinations are just a short walk from the Marienplatz.
