We had a good experience with the staff but the hostel lacks warmth and life. We enjoyed the shared kitchen. It was a very basic room but it was good enough for 2 nights considering the price and that we booked last minute.
This review is for the backpacker section of this property. It has several private rooms, half with lake view.
There is an incredible view from the KITCHEN. Spacious yard with picnic tables and more views. We saw a rainbow over the lake from our bedroom window. Build a fire in the wood stove in the large lounge. You're in the middle of nowhere but that's the point. See more stars than you thought existed.
The lodge is old and run-down but the setting more than makes up for that. You will meet interesting people too.
Lone Backpackers was a great spot for regrouping, meeting other travelers and enjoying the views of the beautiful lake. The staff was amazing, so accommodating and friendly.. amazing food and lodge area to unwind and have a drink after a long day on the lake.

Charged but couldn’t stay
We didn’t stay at Lone Moose due to flooding and road damage further up the road at Milford Sound. Unfortunately when we phoned to ask for a refund we couldn’t get one because apparently the road was technically open up to Te Anau Downs but closed just after.
