This photogenic monument, which sits atop a grassy hill, is a reminder of the sacrifice of Australian men and women in war.

Pay a tribute to the Australian men and women who committed their lives to the country in war at the Shrine of Remembrance. This classical monument, built in the design of a Greek temple, is a spectacular sight. Walk up its impressive steps, admire its columned façade and experience the solemn atmosphere of this memorial.

Built in 1934, the Shrine of Remembrance has served as a poignant reminder of patriotic sacrifice in Melbourne. Join locals and tourists who visit to pay their respects and reflect on the biblical verse “Greater love hath no man”, which is inscribed into the centre of the sanctuary.

The shrine is surrounded by 13 hectares (32 acres) of picturesque parkland. Get a great photograph of the solid temple-like monument from the eternal flame, a fire that burns in front of the shrine.

On November 11, you can witness the unique Ray of Light ceremony. On this day, a gap in the roof lets in a ray of sun that illuminates the word "love" from the shrine's many inscriptions. Visitors at other times of year can still see a re-enactment of this ceremony, performed every half hour using an electric light.

Stop by the education centre to learn about Australia’s military history. This institution contains classrooms, meeting areas and a Gallery of Medals. Here you can see examples of military awards, including two coveted Victoria Crosses.

From the shrine's position on a small hill, enjoy panoramic views of the city. Tours of the shrine are free and leave each afternoon. Pass through the gift shop and browse war-related books and souvenirs.

After paying your tribute, stop by nearby monuments like the Legacy Garden of Appreciation and the Gallipoli Memorial.

Find the Shrine of Remembrance in Kings Domain on St Kilda Road. Walk south from Flinders Street station or use one of many tram routes that pass by. Drivers can find parking easily on nearby streets.

The shrine does not charge admission. It is open daily until late afternoon.
