Engage with the island environment while enjoying postcard-pretty views in the Northwest Point National Park. This reserve is situated on the northern tip of Providenciales and constitutes two sections: a pond nature reserve and a marine nature park. The Northwest Point Marine Natural Park is home to an expansive barrier reef, while the Northwest Point Pond Nature Reserve pond reserve is a great place to spot native vegetation and bird species.
On the western side of the point, the reef brings vibrant colour to the sea floor. Snorkel or scuba dive amongst sea sponges, turtles and tropical fish. Be sure to observe the dangers of rough seas, sharp rocks and sea urchins when swimming off the point. Fishing is prohibited in this conservation park.
For some land-based nature, walk the rocky paths of the park’s “iron shore” – so called for its dramatic jagged appearance. Discover caves hidden amongst the rocks while ospreys and brown pelicans patrol the skies above.
Nearby, Malcolm Beach offers 2.1 kilometres (1.3 miles) of pristine sand. Explore the adjacent pond reserve and learn about the fascinating saltwater wildlife that inhabits these pools. Keep an eye out for birds in particular as many come here in breeding season. Amongst many species, spot flamingos, oystercatchers, herons, egrets and stilts. To get to the pond, visitors will need to walk 800 metres (0.5 miles) south from Northwest Point, and then traverse a short trail through light brush. The second pool is surrounded by mangroves and so is inaccessible.
Northwest Point National Park is located 12.9 kilometres (8 miles) from Providenciales International Airport. Get there along the Millennium Highway and follow signs to the entrance to Northwest Point Resort. Trails will point to “Natural Park.” Once on the coast, it is recommended that you park the car and walk as vehicles often get bogged in the soft sand.
