Avissynias Square is the picturesque setting for one of Athens’ most popular attractions, the Monastiraki Flea Market. This jumble of antique shops and street vendors is a paradise for bargain-hunters and those with an eye for the unusual. Second-hand books, vintage clothes, collectables, leatherware and accessories are just some of the items on offer. It’s an atmospheric and fun place to barter for souvenirs and novelties, with most of the shopkeepers and stallholders happy to strike a deal.
Nearby Psiri is packed with craft shops and galleries, where more serious shoppers can peruse unique and often valuable items of jewellery, art and antiques, or just while away the time window shopping.
As the morning rush gives way to the gentler pace of the afternoon and early evening, the area comes alive with street performers, dancers and musicians. The variety of talent on offer is bewildering and usually includes something for all tastes and ages, from clowns and jugglers for the kids to African drummers and jazz bands for the grown-ups. Weekends in particular are a great time to check out the live entertainment on offer, which lends a festive atmosphere to the flea market and packs the square with revellers.
As the shops put up their shutters and the stalls pack up their wares, the focus switches to food! The Greeks know how to combine ingredients in the most delicious ways so that even a simple snack becomes a real treat. If you’ve only managed to grab a gyros sandwich in between shopping, you’ll be ready for something a little more substantial, so choose a seat in one of the nearby tavernas and try a local dish such as spanakopita (spinach and feta cheese pie), dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) or moussaka (minced lamb with potatoes and aubergines).
Monastiraki Flea Market is in Avissynias Square, in the centre of Athens, and within walking distance of Syntagma Square and the main tourist sites. It is open daily but the most popular and busiest day is Sunday.

Recommend to walk around the flea market and check out the prices as you can definitely find a bargain. Also watch the gypsies and the Africans as they try and sell you things. Always watch your bags.
