Wonderful little cabin in walking distance of the best shell beach, a four minute drive to beautiful Mendocino and even closer to amazing hiking. Watch amazing sunsets from your little deck. Yes that’s the ocean out there! Fall asleep to the sound of waves crashing and sea lions too!;-) Wander to the private creek, pick apples and blackberries. Walk 4 minutes to the most amazing hidden shell beach on the coast. Relaxation! It doesn’t get any more “Mendo” than this!

After paying for our 3 nights stay between June 13 & June 16. The host demanded an extra 1 day hire with another new receipt stating the cleaner found out that we havent left the property. On the 1st day we found hair on the bathroom floor,the plates and cups had dust in them. We found dead flies next to the dining table on the last night while having dinner.

Total Disappointment from the Past
If it wasn't broken it was missing. First, the online photos of the "Quail Cottage" were from the past when the previous owners kept it perfect. Missing from the photos: white wrought iron headboard, antique lamps, comfy blue couch, antique wingback chair, telescope, bin full of firewood, Adirondack deck chairs, and UGLY bedside lamps. We spent a lot of money for 4 nights and found only a half roll of TP, 2 sticks of green firewood and no kindling, no garbage bags, corroded batteries in the remotes, a heater that barely worked. We had to buy TP, firewood, kindling, garbage bags and AAA batteries (and then the Roku remote still didn't work). A groundsman was chopping rounds into firewood and he told me they were green (and wet). The fireplace was our only source of heat with a freeze watch. We tried to make the best of a birthday weekend and said, "at least we can watch our one Netflix show on the iPad and on Sunday the WiFi went out. We didn't call the owners and decided to just stick it out because there were too many things wrong and we didn't want to waste our time waiting for someone to show up, if they were even capable of repair. Twice I had to go out on our deck at night and give directions to guests that were lost due to poor check-in instructions. They had driven up to a dead end hill and bottomed out on the eroded driveway. We wondered what happened to the deer, chipmunks and quail running around as in the past and saw a guest laying in the hammock down by the fire ring while his 3 Pit Bulls ran free, harassing the chickens in the coop. Ya Think? Oh, and a lovely, dead, 6 foot plant in the living room as a centerpiece. We started coming up to the Victorian Farmhouse 23 years ago, sometimes twice a year and always looked forward to the personal touches of Jo and Fred, the home cooked breakfast, the beautifully decorated rooms, no dogs allowed, and the quiet wildlife. I have just 2 more words for the new absentee owners, Daphne and Richard: NEVER AGAIN.

Everything was absolutely perfect except the lack of taxi/Uber service from the Mendo Village to/from the cottage. My only *qualm* was having to drive myself to dinner. 😅

Lovely, cozy cottage. The bed was heaven, hated getting out of it.
The cottage was so cozy. Loved having the fireplace located where it is. Unfortunately, I do have 2 criticisms. I couldn't open the lock going out to the deck off of the small bedroom. Would have loved to have sat out there but the lock was rusted shut. The road going up to the cottage is in serious need of repair. The ruts were so deep I was concerned my car would get stuck.

Outside town, central to everything
Nice private cabin with two outdoor patios to choose from for morning coffee. Clean, comfortable space. Easy hop into Mendocino, multiple beaches, Van Damme state park and pygmy forest walk for all abilities. Short drive further north to Russian Gulch forested hike (north trail). Great location for exploring Mendocino coast and disconnect from digital life.

Perfect little spot for a weekend getaway
We had a great weekend away to celebrate Mother's Day. The quail cottage is clean and cozy, and very private. We looked out the windows and deck to see the ocean and beautiful tall trees rustling in the ocean breeze. Contactless check-in was smooth. We brought a couple Home Chef meal kits and the kitchen was stocked with almost everything we needed. The independent grocery store a few minutes away in Mendocino had everything else we needed, plus some wonderful local wine, cheeses and crackers to enjoy with our fig jam from the Mendocino jam store. Our 7 year-old son was happy to have his own space, bed and wifi. Loved the fireplace and comfy bed. And make sure to not miss the private beach! It's a quick walk south on Highway 1 (you gotta hustle a little since the road is busy), and then take the path by the guardrail down to the beautiful cove / beach area. Hike up Joey's Island! We had such a lovely time!
