The largest freshwater lake in Florida offers some great fishing and hiking opportunities.

Derived from the Hitchiti indigenous tribal words to mean “Big Water”, Lake Okeechobee is one of the most popular destinations for boaters, bird watchers and hikers. However, it is fishing that brings the most visitors to this gigantic lake of 1,891 square kilometres. Affectionately dubbed 'The Big O' by locals, the lake measures 59 kilometres in length and is 48 kilometres wide, with an average water depth of three metres. Flowing into the Florida Everglades, the lake and its surrounding wetlands play a crucial role in the local ecosystem and South Florida’s freshwater supply.

Clewiston, a town tucked on the southern shore of the lake, offers fishing charters along with a professional guide. Whether you are a fishing novice or an experienced angler, trips may be customised to your needs. Acclaimed for the largemouth bass that cross its waters, both commercial and recreational fishermen flock to the lake for a spot of bass fishing. For the best conditions, come between December and March.

Circling the lake is the 177-kilometre Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail that sits atop the Herbert Hoover Dike. Hop on this trail year-round to hike or cycle amidst sublime nature. Soak up the serene atmosphere afforded by the large lake as you keep your eyes peeled for the area's wildlife soaring in the skies, including herons, egrets and waterfowl. Also watch out for large flocks of different bird species during the migratory months. After a long hike, take a break at one of the picnic tables along the path.

While you're in the area, check out the nearby town of Belle Glade, located on the south end of the lake, and tee off at the Sugar Cane Golf Club. On the north end of the lake sits the city of Okeechobee, where you can take part in events regularly hosted by the Rodeo Arena. Check the arena’s website for a schedule of events.

The lake is about 111 kilometres northwest of Fort Lauderdale. If you have your own transport, you can easily drive up to the lake from Fort Lauderdale. If not, you can opt to join a hiking trip to the lake from Fort Lauderdale and Clewiston.
