Perfectly located to explore the Big Island

Posted 15 Jul. 2019 on Hotels
My husband and I were lucky enough to spend a long weekend on the Big Island. It was our first time there, so we didn't really know what to expect, nor where to stay. Kona and Hilo seemed like the most popular spots. But, when we read the reviews of the BIR, we took a chance. I'm so glad we did! Chad, our host, was very communicative and friendly. He made sure we had everything we needed. The room was clean and comfortable. The best part--the property is located right across the street from a fabulous snorkeling beach! There was free snorkeling gear for us to use at the BIR and we went to our local beach every morning, sometimes twice a day. We also discovered Two Step beach, which was worth the drive. BIR is about 15 minutes south of Kona, which is a very nice resort tow; but we were happy to be a little further down the road. We also spent a day driving the Saddle Road and visiting Hilo, which we enjoyed. If we return to the Big Island, we will definitely stay at the Big Island Retreat again.

A charming place but limited privacy

Posted 4 Mar. 2019 on Hotels
We had a pleasant stay. Gigi was a very good hostess. The only issues were (1) no elevator & (2) little privacy within the room & between the room & outside/other rooms. We had frosted glass & a screen door to the lanai but no curtains, shades, etc.

Aloha, The atmosphere and character of the property is very much open air living...though all rooms are screened and provide enough privacy and enjoyment for the outdoor elements. If your expectations are that of a hotel our experience is more local living, simple. Mahalo for your feedback. Gigi

One block from the beach, minutes south of kona, and a very short drive from the airport. This location is perfect. Then you top that with a host that is both freindly and knowledgable. Together make this a location that will bring us back year after year!

Awesome, beautiful, walking distance to beaches, shopping and local trolley. The staff is amazing and the environment is for those who want to experience the island life! No AC, but at night it cools down, and we were gone all day! The manager Gigi is very informative and educational. We would definitely stay again. Gigi and her staff made us feel like we were at home and we definitely would recommend and stay again ina heartbeat!

Its OK if you dont want AC

Posted 8 Sep. 2018 on Hotels
The property and grounds are very nice clean. The service was OK, but not outstanding like some of the other reviews. We got nickel and dimed on some charges. "Pizza Night" means bring your own. They advertise free snorkel gear but dont count on any being available, and you will want to snorkel as there is a great beach right across the street. Might be nice in December but I would not advise staying at this property during summer months. The room was very uncomfortable at night until the dewpoint was reached, and uninhabitable after about noon. But hey, you are there to be at the beach or out and about, right? At least that was what the host pitched about this being a typical Hawaiian "island life" property. Funny thing is we saw AC units all over the place, so that got to be kind of a joke. More people like AC on the Big Island than you let on Gigi.

Aloha Mark, Appreciate your feedback. I am sorry the property did not meet your expectations and maybe should have read thoroughly through our description. We are not your typical 'hotel' and do not provide AC. I hope the rest of your Hawaiian vacation was enjoyable. Gigi

Location was good, but rest of the stay was overrated for what was there and the price paid (deceptive pricing). Strongly suggest that others look for other accommodations.

Luxury Overstated

Posted 19 Jun. 2018
The description of the Luxury third floor suite is quite overstated. The "traditional" Hawaii style, is no air conditioning, very poorly chosen smooth tile flooring which turned out to be a serious hazard for both my wife and I when we awoke to a slick floor from condensation and tried to get off the very tall bed. My wife slipped and fell, sustaining serious bruising. I also found myself slipping and sliding. For our safety I contacted Expedia who got us other accommodations. And now I understand the management no refund policy. They know they have a real problem and would not even entertain a partial refund. Sad but true. Stay at your own risk and expense.
