Halona Cove got the world’s attention when it was featured in the 1953 Hollywood classic, From Here to Eternity, thanks to Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr’s steamy love scene. The secluded cove on “Eternity Beach” is the perfect backdrop to a romantic movie, and also an ideal spot for a quiet and picturesque beach day away from the Waikiki crowds.
Stop by Halona Blowhole on your way to the cove to see the roaring fountains of water that shoot up during high tides and big swells. Park for free at the top of the cliffs and begin your journey down to the cove.
Make your way carefully down the steep and rocky path. Once you get to the beach, wander along the sand and choose an idyllic spot to settle in with your towel and beach gear. Relax in the warm Hawaiian sun or bring your snorkel and mask to explore the water. If you’re lucky, green sea turtles will be gliding beneath the waves. Rough sea conditions can be unsafe, as the currents can get quite strong. If you’re confident with waves, try bodysurfing. Head to the beach’s eastern shore to find safe places in the tide pools for children to play.
Those with an interest in fishing can cast a line at Bamboo Ridge, a busy spot on the west side of the beach. The area is named for the bamboo fishing poles that once dotted the shore.
During the colder months, you might catch sight of a pod of humpback whales, migrating for the winter. Halona Cove and the cliffs above are among the best places for whale watching during this time.
Find Halona Cove approximately 16 kilometres (10 miles) east of Waikiki. Parking is free but ensure you take your valuables with you or keep them out of sight. To explore further, keep driving eastwards along the coastline, where more coves and beaches can be found.
