Stand in this central square to view some of Gothenburg’s most important buildings alongside a spectacular statue of the city’s “Golden King”.

Gustav Adolf Square is a great meeting place to enjoy stately decorations and fine architecture while travelling between Gothenburg’s attractions. Situated by the canal, the square is surrounded by government buildings like the City Hall and the law courts. Enjoy a takeaway coffee while you walk through or stop to relax in this wide plaza on the steps of the central statue.

Originally, this plaza was known as Stortorget or “big square”. It’s not hard to see why, given that the square holds some of the most important buildings in the city. It was later named after King Gustavus II Adolphus, whose statue was built in the centre of the square in 1854. This celebrated figure, known locally as the “Golden King”, was credited with Sweden’s victory in the 30 years war. Admire the statue’s proud pose, which shows the king pointing to the ground. It was designed to capture the moment he is said to have declared, “This is where the city shall be.”

From the square, explore one of four major streets. Find Köpmansgatan to the north, Norra Hamngatan to the south, Östra Hamngatan to the east and Torggatan on the west side.

Around the square, enjoy the impressive arched façades of the City Hall and the former Gothenburg Stock Exchange. The neoclassical city hall building was opened in 1849 and features an 18th-century townhouse that was intended for a former city councillor. On weekdays, look out for formally dressed public servants passing through the square on their way to City Hall, which still functions as a municipal administrative building.

For another worthwhile sight, look to the nearby law courts that were designed by the well-known architect Gunnar Asplund. Walk to the Dutch-style Kronhuset, which dates back to 1643 and is one of the oldest buildings in the city. For a contrast in architecture and to do some shopping, explore the sleek modern Nordstan retail complex.

Gustav Adolf Square is situated in central Gothenburg and can be accessed on foot from many destinations and hotels around the city.
