Located in New Town, this hotel is within a 5-minute walk of Princes Street and George Street. Royal Mile and Grassmarket are also within 10 minutes. Edinburgh Waverley Station is 6 minutes by foot and Edinburgh (ZXE-Edinburgh Waverly Train Station) is 6 minutes.
The property has no facility for unloading your car - once I found this out I tried to telephone the hotel to identify their off site parking but none answered the phone. Eventually I Paid for street parking a few hundred yards away and walked with all our luggage to the hotel and went back to pick up the car and move it to the designated car park which is about 10 minutes walk away.
Mercure is supposed to be Accor’s mid market brands, we have stayed in several and they have generally been good. This hotel is old and in poor condition - the decor and the fittings are reminiscent of a 70’s Post House. There is wallpaper on the ceiling which is peeling, the bathroom fittings are “original”. Could not use the bar or restaurant as we were told they were fully booked.
Certainly would not recommend this hotel to anyone travelling by car. For those arriving by train is is close to Waverley.
We were not informed that the maid would be cleaning rooms it was disappointing to come back to an unmade bed.I ordered a bottle of wiñè to be ready in room on check in this never arrived we went down srairs to purchace 2 glasses of chardonnay at £21 .the room was basic and in needof refurb. Bar area and restaurant were smart breakfast was good but service was slow receptionist sent us to wrong bus stop for royal yacht. Edinburgh and the people were great we visited the dome for afternoon tea this was great and we went to the beautiful botanical gardens
