Fingal Head Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Fingal Head featuring waves and surfing as well as an individual male
This lovely coastal village comes complete with striking volcanic rock formations, excellent outdoor activity options and a wealth of local wildlife.

Stay in Fingal Head and make the most of being perfectly located to explore some of the most picturesque to be found in the vicinity of the Northern Rivers. Spend your days here fishing, snorkeling, diving or simply walking the local trails and taking in the natural landmarks. These include a remarkable rock formation known as the Giant’s Causeway.

Fingal Head takes its name from a giant named Fingal who features in Irish mythology. Legend has it that Fingal built the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland, a rock formation which shares a name with this Australian one. Both the Irish and Australian causeways were actually created by lava flows, which cooled in the ocean to leave columns of rock rising from the waves. Make sure you visit the Fingal Head Giant’s Causeway to see this incredible natural spectacle in reality, as photos cannot do it justice.

Take time to see the idyllic Fingal Head Lighthouse, a pretty white building which occupies a dramatic spot just above the causeway. Follow the trails that take in this beautiful spot as well as the aptly named Dreamtime Beach, an impossibly beautiful stretch of white sand. The same trails will also take you out to Leticia Spit, another very scenic spot that is ideal for a picnic.

Pass a quiet afternoon fishing in the Tweed River, a favorite place for casual and serious anglers alike. When you need some variety, head to nearby Chinderah, a charming village that offers equally scenic and rewarding fishing spots.

For a more energetic encounter with the water, join one of the guided snorkeling or diving trips that frequent the Cook Island Aquatic Reserve. The waters here bustle with all kinds of marine life, from turtles to leopard sharks and rays.

Fingal Head is located on the Far North Coast of New South Wales, just south of the Queensland border. The closest airport is at the Gold Coast, about 15 minutes’ drive away. Rent a car at the airport or catch a public bus to reach Fingal Head where each day you will wake up in a place of mythic beauty.
