Cabbage Beach featuring landscape views, a sandy beach and jet skiing
Zip down waterslides at amusement parks, explore peaceful trails leading through lush gardens and relax on golden-sand beaches in this large island chain.

The Bahamas are a well-known tourist hub and cruise-ship destination comprising more than 700 islands in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Florida. Relax in a serene oceanfront spa, sip cocktails from a beach sun lounger, enjoy a helicopter tour of the capital city and take the whole family to a recreated pirate ship.

From Ernest Hemingway’s favorite retreat, Bimini, to the rolling hills of Cat Island, the Bahamian islands are as diverse as the residents who live here. While the islands have a long colonial history and still retain ties to Great Britain as a Commonwealth nation, The Bahamas has enjoyed independence since 1973.

On the island of New Providence is the largest city, Nassau, which welcomes tourists with its attractive harbor and lively atmosphere. Visit the Pirates of Nassau attraction to see exhibits on the area’s pirate past and watch animatronic pirates sail the open ocean. Families will also enjoy strolling through the Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Center where you can spot creatures such as lemurs, jaguars and pink flamingos.

Outside of Nassau there are plenty of less-crowded vacation spots. Head to the island of Grand Bahama to explore its luscious botanical gardens, the Garden of the Groves. Stop by the Perfume Factory to find out what ingredients are used to create local fragrances.

Find family activities in The Bahamas for all ages. Chief among The Bahamas’ kid-friendly attractions is Aquaventure Waterpark on Paradise Island. From a mock Mayan temple to waterslides barreling through caves, this attraction provides hours of fun.

Getting to The Bahamas is no trouble at all, as there are about 57 airports throughout the islands and three dedicated international ones in Nassau, Grand Bahama Island and the Exumas. Once on the islands, rent a bicycle or motor scooter to zip around town with ease. Bus services are available on Nassau and Grand Bahama Island. Island-hop using a fast ferry service that provides high-speed transportation through the Atlantic.

The Bahamas offer a taste of tropical island life not far from the U.S. mainland.
