3/5 Okay

Nice spot
Apollo bay is beautiful and the Great Otways drive is stunning. We were thankful we could bring our Dogs and the No wifi proved a nice Detox in the end. I think this place could be so much better if it erred on the side of hospitality rather than stinginess. It felt uncomfortable to be charged a $500 deposit and to receive that notification before check in details. I think it served to put us offside, assuming we were going to do wrong, rather than feeling welcoming and friendly. Also we had to take our rubbish with us and it was just weird. This is upfront so we knew this but could not understand the reasoning. The owners put this down to being an eco retreat but it’s not actually a sustainable solution. It presupposes the guests will offload their rubbish in an environmentally considerate way. There was no compost or other eco offerings that gave the guests a reason for this requirement. Either build it in the price or offer a sustainable philosophy that is legitimate. It felt stingey rather than eco conscious. It made us not want to cook or hang out in the place as much, so then why have a big kitchen area and cooking facilities? Redesign the space so it makes more sense. It felt like a lot of rules and barriers rather than a generous place which imbued a sense of relaxation and care for guests. I think it put us offside rather than being able to just enjoy the surrounds. I think I would’ve preferred to pay more and feel more at ease in otherwise lovely surrounds. The place def needs a Reno and could afford to spend more to get more in the end.

4/5 Good

Unfortunate
Overall my wife and I enjoyed our short visit. The place was clean, quaint and located peacefully 11 minutes out of town with little distraction. Unfortunately some issues let out stay down. I read an earlier negative review which stated there was inadequate heating and no firewood supplied for the wood fire. So I packed some kindling and firewood just in case. Unfortunately the negative review was correct. There was no firewood but it does NOT state that you need to bring your own whwnbooking which is a major oversight, especially in winter. The wall heater downstairs only heated moderately and is aline inadequate for downstairs. The upstairs heater we couldn't get to work at all. Both electric blankets also failed to work as did the over head lighting in the bathroom. My last comment would be when booking ,that it did say that your cottage is dual occupancy, with only have a locked door deviding dwellings.it was quite easy her her the other couple moving around next door.Another oversight in description maybe? So therefor overall we loved our stay but unfortunately it could of been a lot better if the owners ensured the one the properties were geared correctly and two, a clearer described and understanding of the properties when booking them.

2/5 Poor

Beautiful location, terrible experience
The property managers didn’t tell us there was a code to access the property, and it has no phone signal, so we had to drive back into town to try and contact them. The remote property has no phone signal or internet, I am an asthmatic. Heating doesn’t work well, property unpainted and covered in lichen and mould outside. Inside quite nice, signs everywhere to tell you what to do. Fireplace requires you to buy your own fire wood and kindling, in town. Kitchen poorly set up. Otaway Retreats unresponsive to our problems with this place. The location is lovely, find somewhere else to stay.
