Those looking for the world's best whiskeys may travel to Kentucky to sample some authentic Bourbon or Scotland to check out Johnnie Walker's distillery, but perhaps they should be booking flights to Tokyo as Japan has become one of the world's premier whiskey destinations.
According to the New York Times, the whiskey movement in Japan is on the rise. In 2008, Japanese labels took home both the World’s Best Single Malt and World’s Best Blended categories at the highly regarded World Whiskey Awards.
One of the best places to taste spirits in Tokyo is the Shot Bar Zoetrope, according to the Times. The establishment has a staggeringly wide selection of whiskeys, including a large amount of local concoctions. The news provider recommends starting with the Yoichi Single Malt 1988, which is the replacement for the sold-out 1987 offering that took home the 2008 single malt title.
Another fun place to sample some whiskey in Tokyo is Nikka Blender's Bar. While this watering hole only offers Nikka whiskeys, it gives patrons a chance to create their own blend. Guests are given a tray of six whiskeys and encouraged to try their hand at creating a winning libation, reports the news source.
