Budget-conscious Aussie travellers often start to plan how they will cover their accommodation and transportation expenses on holiday. However, some hotels have been offering their patrons alternatives for paying to stay. According to SpringWise.com, the Clarion Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden, is allowing artist to gift their works of art for a free night's stay at the facility.
Individuals who have created paintings, collages, photographs or drawings can fill out a form that signs their work over to the hotel, and in exchange, they can enjoy a one-night stay with a friend. Any artist can take advantage of this initiative twice a year to stay in a charming hotel in the city.
Hotel in Germany offered free nights for theatrical performances
The hotel in Stockholm is not the first to offer these kinds of exchange programs to the public. There was a project in Stuttgart, Germany, Hotel Performance, which allowed all types of artists and musicians to trade a night or two for a live show. According to Spiegel Online, the building was open for a temporary program from 2009 to 2010 and welcomed anyone who felt they had a performance to trade it for a roof over their head. Every night the hotel would host an evening of poetry readings, punk shows, dances and other theatrics to those who wished to witness the free art.
Stay at B&Bs in Italy for exchange of goods and services
Although the project in Stuttgart was meant to last temporarily, there is another event in Italy with a similar idea that has been successfully organised for the past few years. Called La Settimana Del Baratto, the idea is that participating bed and breakfasts across the country allow guests to barter with goods and services for accommodations. While the program began as a week-long occasion, it has expanded into a year-round undertaking for certain B&Bs included in a list of those willing to try an exchange. For instance, travellers who are handy mechanics can offer lessons in automotive work or help fix up vehicles at various villas in locales like Palmero, Sorano or Foligno. Owners of these establishments can put up their requests on the official website, asking for things such as nannying, specialised martial arts instruction, apartment swaps or electronics.
Aussies who are serious about shaving some money off their holiday can look into options like these which may alleviate some of the costs to travel and keep the trip as low-cost as possible.
