Private island villas: Extreme luxury - General Travel News

Nothing says luxury travel quite like renting a private island - or better yet, living on one throughout the year. The best way to reserve an island, from the tropics of the South Pacific to the teal waters of the Mediterranean, is to call a villa agent, who will not only provide ample advice, but may also be able to find affordable options. Whatever the price range, having free reign on a sandy rock in the middle of nowhere combines "Castaway" with "Blue Lagoon," and Aussie travellers can live in a fantasy world for as long as they please.

Motu Tetaraire, Tahiti

Luxury holidaymakers looking for indulgent short breaks needn't go far to enjoy a private island getaway. A five-hour flight to Tahiti and quick boat ride are all it takes to get to Motu Tetaraire. There are no other tourists within several kilometres of the nine-acre island, giving Aussies ample opportunities to do just about anything they want. With a private kitchen staff and personal chef, every meal is prepared to the highest standards, with many of the menu items fished right off the waters of the island.

Adventure travellers can while away the hours canoeing, snorkeling and windsurfing around the island, which is surrounded by shallow lagoons. Of course, with no cities around for hundreds of kilometres, evening stargazing on the island is second to none.

Ideal for honeymoons and small wedding parties, Motu Tetaraire can comfortably accommodate up to 10 people and features a guest bungalow for added privacy.

Necker, British Virgin Islands

Sir Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Group, rents out his private villa in the British Virgin Islands throughout the year, and Aussies who want to live like a rockstar can bring a big group of friends and family along to get the best out of this 74-acre tropical paradise. Like Motu Tetaraire, Necker Island is surrounded by shallow coral reefs, making it perfect for leisure snorkeling and adventurous deep-sea diving or spear fishing. After spending the day at sea, guests can bring their fresh catch back to the eight-bedroom mansion and have their master chef prepare it any way they desire.

Along with providing culinary delights, Necker's staff are on-call 24/7 and can treat guests to spa treatments throughout the day. Ladies who want to scrub away the salty ocean can make an appointment with one of the resident beauty therapists for a full and rejuvenating makeover.
