From the Caribbean to the South Pacific there are countless islands from which to choose when selecting a holiday destination but those looking for a unique place for an island getaway may want to consider Germany.
The island of Hiddensee is about a five-hour train and fairy ride from Berlin and offers a rustic setting for island holidays that are off the beaten path, according to the New York Times.
Called the "Pearl of the Baltic," Hiddensee has pleasant landscapes, white sand beaches and beautiful wild flowers, reports the news source.
Private cars are not allowed on Hiddensee, lending the island a rural feel that has largely been lost at many holiday destinations.
"You could say that time stops here," 17-year-old German Maximilian Hils, whose father has been taking the family to Hiddensee for 10 years, told the news provider. "You don’t need your phone, your Facebook, your car. It’s a little bit like entering a different century."
Travelers looking to take a holiday like no other may want to plan a trip to Hiddensee.
