What you can expect

Your visit will start with a visit to Douloufakis Winery. Located in the village of Dafnes, a few kilometres south of Heraklion, Crete, Greece. It produces wines from Cretan indigenous varieties (Vidiano, Vilana, Muscat White of Spina, Malvasia, Liatiko, Mandilari and Kotsifali) but also international ones such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Syrah. Be guided at the facilities of the winery and get familiar with the process of wine being produced, taste our wines, and learn about the grape varieties.

Next comes a visit to the Archaeological Site of Gortyna, an important city that was next to Knossos in importance and splendour, in early times these two great towns had entered into a league that enabled them to reduce the whole of Crete under their power, in after-times when dissensions arose among them they were engaged in continual hostilities. Classical Greek mythology has it that Gortyn was the site of one of Zeus' many affairs. This myth features the princess Europa, whose name has been applied to the continent, Europe. Disguised as a bull, Zeus abducted Europa from Lebanon and they had an affair under a plane tree (Platanus), a tree that may be seen today in Gortys. Following this affair, three children were born, Minos, Rhadamanthys, and Sarpedon, who became the kings of the three Minoan Palaces in Crete.

Your trip will continue at Matala. The place shelters a unique hippie atmosphere, and even just one day spent in Matala is enough to feel its vibe and connect with the bohemian side of Crete. You will discover how to get to Matala, what to do in the village, the surrounding area, and everything there is to know about Malata Beach.

Right after comes the village of Agia Galini, the ideal place if you want to combine mountains and sea. Nevertheless, the beautiful scenery, clear shallow waters, and the vicinity of the village make it quite enjoyable. There are plenty of bars along the beach that offer drinks and fast food. Agia Galini is quite lovely by itself, offering you a chance to explore the network of cobblestone alleys and discover small jewellery shops or traditional taverns. The modern village was built over an ancient Minoan city known as Soulia and parts of the historical heritage can still be found today. The old Byzantine church of Panagia can be admired in the village cemetery, overlooking the sea.
