Marukin Soya Sauce Memorial Hall
As you walk close to the facility, you cannot help but notice the roasty fermentation aroma from the soya sauce breweries in the area.
Marukin is Shodoshima's largest soya sauce producer. It was founded during the Taisho era (1912-1926). The original factory was converted into the Marukin Soya Sauce Memorial Hall museum in 1987. The museum is a great introduction to how soya sauce is brewed, and how the traditional wooden barrel brewing differs from today’s brewing process. You are encouraged to try the very tasty “soya sauce” soft ice cream at the museum’s gift shop.
Mt. Doun Temple No.1 of the Shodoshima Sacred Pilgrimage Temple sites
This is the first sacred site of the 88 Shodoshima pilgrimage temples, where eminent priest Kukai visited 1200 years ago. The temple is located in a large cave near the top of Mt. Doun.
If you happen to visit the temple between June 1 and July 20, you may see a shadow of Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) appear on the cave walls, as the sunlight shines into the cave.
Mt. Goishi Temple No.2 of the Shodoshima Sacred Pilgrimage Temple sites
This temple was once a training site for monks. It is well known as being a challenging site to get to, due to its mountain location. The amazing nature view from this temple may leave you feeling humble and in awe as the monks did centuries ago and today.
The name of the mountain and this temple “Goishi” stems from surrounding marbled black and white stones, which resemble those stones used in the board game “Go”.
