Overview

A good-looking spot on the river, with plenty of heritage architecture and an infectiously languorous mood, the royal town of Muar (once known as Bandar Maharani, or 'Empress Town') was historically a very important commercial centre. So important in fact, that it had its own rail system, known as Muar State Railways, running from 1889 to 1925.

With each road in its central core painted a certain colour, Muar is very pretty and well worth spending a day exploring. It was also voted the cleanest city in the Asean region in 2018. Most of the heritage buildings are handily inscribed with their year of construction.

Central Chinatown sees most of the action, showing off its handsome pre-war architecture, temples and a handful of good restaurants and Chinese teahouses. Muar makes for an intriguing and rewarding off-the-beaten-track stop between Melaka and Johor Bahru.

Muar River
  • 2h
Muar Town is basically located along the Muar River. You can stroll down the walkway to explore by foot from Tanjung Emas Park or ask our driver to drive you to the landmarks or attraction listed below. Sultan Ibrahim Jamek Mosque Located close to Muar River, Sultan Ibrahim Jamek Mosque is going to amaze you by its Western & Middle East architecture that perfectly blends with traditional Malay design. The construction of this historical mosque was completed in 1887, making it the oldest mosque in Muar. Muar Clock Tower Painted in yellow and white, the tower that features old England architecture makes it so unique and different from the building beside. But due to safety concern, the government had padlocked all the stairs inside. Even though you cannot enjoy the town view from the top, taking pictures with the beautiful tower is quite satisfying too Sultan Ismail Bridge Opened in 1967, Sultan Ismail Bridge is built to link Muar town with Tanjung Agas. It can take you to Batu Pahat, Johor Bahru, and even Melaka. Initially, this was a toll bridge but due to objections by locals, the toll collection is abolished so now, crossing the bridge is free of charge. Being one of the iconic landmarks in Muar, you really should stop by here and admire its distinctive architecture. When all the lights on at night, the bridge offers you a magnificent view in a romantic ambiance. Before construction, people must depend on ferry services to cross the river. Due to rapid development which the services cannot meet the demand, they decided to build this bridge to replace the ferry ride. Besides, the ride is time-consuming and dangerous during flood season too. 'The Loving Sisters' Look out for this terrific black and white mural of two sisters on the side of a building by the roundabout as Jln Arab meeets Jln Bakri. The 12m-high painting was created by Russian artist Julia Volchkova. Nan Hai Fei Lai Temple The oldest Chinese temple in Muar, Nan Hai Fei Lai Temple is a Buddhist temple located in between 2 shophouses and opposite to the Bentayan Express Bus Station. Many locals come here to pray for family peace since they were young. During the old times, this historic temple serves as the major worshipping place for both immigrants and locals. It is also called Goddess of Mercy Temple. Royal Customs and Excise Building Today painted blue and yellow, with the date 1909 on its domed clock tower, this was once the Muar Railway Station Building. The railway was established in 1890 in response to the huge economic boom of the late 19th century, when Muar became the wealthiest district in Johor. It stopped running in 1925. 434 Kopi House Running since 1953, busy 434 Kopi is the best cafe in town, its marble-topped tables overlooked by a large copy of the Mona Lisa. Delicious coffee (brewed from Malaysia Liberica Elephant beans and other varieties) is served in dainty cups, but there's also fruit and herbal teas, shakes, and a menu of Malay dishes. Sultan Abu Bakar Building Red-roofed and painted light blue and white, this imposing and grand copy of the Istana Besar (Grand Palace) in Johor Bahru today houses the Muar Land Office and District Office. It dates from 1921.
