Bondi and beyond: those beautiful beaches

Although it's pretty hard to beat in terms of fame and location, Bondi isn't the ‘be all and end all' of Sydney beaches. So, let's take a quick look at the Big B, and some of the other stretches of sand you may care to visit, starting in the north. In this area, try Whale, Palm, Avalon, Dee Why or Fishermans (this one's good for snorkelling) - and perhaps go kayaking at Narrabeen Lagoon. Then, of course, magnificent Manly is not to be missed. To the south, there's Bondi and the slightly quieter but equally stunning Coogee - and why not do the Bondi to Coogee walk while you're in the area? Maroubra and Tamarama are good for surfing, and Cronulla - four beaches in one - is a must-see; do the Cronulla Walk while you're there. Clovelly is good for children, and Bronte has something for everyone - including a coastal walk. But remember: this is just the tip of the iceberg: there are plenty of others (more than 150.), including the famous harbour bays.

Sydney for romance

If you're coming to Sydney for a touch of romance, you won't be disappointed: this city knows how to make a couple feel special. For starters, you can cruise one of the world's most romantic harbours, enjoy some of the world's most beautiful beaches and watch the sun rise or set from some of Australia's best vantage points. Spend an evening at the theatre; indulge in a little shopping, a luxurious spa, a beach picnic and a hand-in-hand walk through historic Hyde Park. Pack a picnic and tackle one of the stunning coastal walks - or if that sounds too tiring, take a moonlit stroll along a harbour bay. Dine out at a waterfront café or in a romantic, candlelit restaurant - or one of the city's many ethnic eateries. And, when it comes to that all-important accommodation, Sydney's selection of hotels and apartments includes everything from quaint boutique to ultra-modern - somewhere, there'll be just the right romantic setting for the pair of you.

Hit those sensational shops

A shopping expedition in Sydney is not without its challenges: there is so much here to tempt and sidetrack. If you're on a bargain hunt, an organised shopping tour is a good idea; otherwise, your day could turn into an exhausting nightmare. But if you're simply out to browse the stores and boutiques, here are some places to head: the CBD is an obvious choice: explore those department stores and gorgeous arcades. The Queen Victoria Building and 1 Martin Place are both beautifully restored buildings offering a good selection of shops; the MLC Centre, Chifley Plaza are two more shopping meccas, and the area around Pitt Street Mall is a shopper's paradise. But for something a little different - and all the latest trends - head out to Oxford Street in Paddington, and carry on down to Darlinghurst. Double Bay has some of the most chic boutiques; and both Darling Harbour and the Rocks are great places to shop and explore. Finally, remember: whichever part of this city you end up shopping in, you'll find it hard to resist spending, so go prepared.

A great night out

Whatever your idea of a great night out, you'll track it down in Sydney. The city is crammed with bars, clubs (and ‘superclubs') party bars, sports bars, pubs and entertainment venues - all of them doing a roaring trade. Head to Darling Harbour as a safe bet - you'll find plenty of restaurants, night clubs and pubs - and opportunities to party. King's Cross needs no introduction, but if it's not your cup of tea, don't worry. Try the pubs in Paddington for something informal and hip, or The Rocks for somewhere a little more formal. A quick check in the Sydney Morning Herald's Friday Metro section will tell you exactly what's on and where to find it.
