Which of those beaches is best?

When you begin your hunt for a Phuket beach resort, first decide whether you want to stay near the after-dark action, or somewhere quieter. Patong is the main beach, and its white sands are backed by shops, clubs, restaurants and pubs: it's the party zone, and very busy from sunset on. The beach itself is excellent, and there's a great range of activities available. Karon is quieter (and big), and nearby Kata is a good place for the family, with plenty of things to do and a magnificent beach. Around the corner, little Kata Noi is quiet and lovely. Beautiful, long Bang Tao has plenty of activities on offer, but is quiet and relaxing, and pretty Kamala Bay is another ideal place for the family, with a selection of restaurants and good snorkelling. In fact, this lovely island's coast is lined with beaches, and those not mentioned here are also well worth investigating. Nai Thon is simply gorgeous, and magnificent Ma Khao is the west coast's best kept secret.

Family holidays on Phuket

This is a great place to bring the family, and there's a plentiful selection of excellent, child-friendly accommodation. Many of the top resorts have special facilities for kids, including play areas and safe pools, and, when it's time for a break from the beach, there's a long list of family activities to choose from. Go cruising to Phi Phi or Phang Nga, visit the the Butterfly Garden; go biking or horse riding, take an eco-tour or - you'll even find somewhere to tackle some ten-pin bowling. And, for a really special treat, take your family on an unforgettable elephant trek. Family beaches on Phuket include Karon, Kata and Kamala, but all the major resort areas offer activities for children.

Make time for the shops

This island has just about every type of retail outlet you could want, including department stores, malls, night markets, street stalls, boutiques, antique shops, galleries - you must make time for some shopping while you're here. Most of the malls are close to Phuket town, and most of the western-style boutiques are in and around Patong – where you'll also find a couple of department stores. Kata and Karon have some good shops too. Don't bargain in the department stores, but do try your luck at the markets and street stalls; Phuket town's night market is worth a visit, and you'll also find markets in Patong, Karon and Kata. Finally, if you can't find the right piece of clothing, get it made. There are excellent tailors and dressmakers the island, who won't take more than two or three days to whip up something special.
