When to go to Gold Coast?
More a case of ‘when not?’ The ideal season is winter (relatively cool days, cool nights and dry), but there’s hardly ever a time when this fabulous resort region isn’t good to visit. The humidity starts to drop in April, and climbs again in spring. You might want to work around the wet season (November-March), school holidays and some of the major events that take place here, such as the Indy week and the Magic Millions - it all depends on the type of holiday you’re looking for. And remember, there’s plenty to keep you busy on rainy days.

Gold Coast Flight times
From Sydney : around 1.5 hours.
From Melbourne : around 2.15 hours.
From Adelaide : around 2.10 hours.
First-time tourist: the beaches (each is different, and there are some great beach walks), theme parks, wildlife sanctuaries, markets...and a cruise to Brisbane is a great way to spend a day. Plan in advance; there really is a huge amount to see and do, and something for every taste.
Gold Coast views: from the observation deck of the world’s highest residential building, QDeck (admission fee applies); from Burleigh Heads, North Burleigh, the Miami cliffs, Point Danger (on the NSW border). Walk the track from Surfers to Main Beach for great vistas of the area.
Culture vulture: Historical Site and Aboriginal Museum, and the Tweed Maritime Museum, both at Tweed Heads; Tamborine Mountain Heritage Centre, Gold Coast Historical Museum, Gold Coast City Art Gallery, Evandale Sculpture Walk on the Nerang River.
Car hire is worthwhile if you want to see and do as much as possible - the attractions are spread out. Shuttle options and travel passes are available too: check which attractions/areas they cover before deciding which to buy. Whale-watching season is late May to November; you’ll need to go out on a boat to see these fantastic creatures. Take time out for a snack at the Bathing Pavilion on Main Beach. Be prepared for the fierce Queensland sun and remember to swim/surf between the red and yellow flags. Catch a ferry from Runaway Bay to South Stradbroke Island (beaches, butterflies, birds and rainforests). Quieter beaches include Palm and Tallebudgera (both calm water), Mermaid, Budds and Bilinga. Family beaches? Maybe Mermaid or Nobby’s, but all the big ones are family-friendly, with great facilities, including Main Beach and Surfers. Burleigh Head National Park has some great and not too arduous walking tracks, with great views for good measure. The hinterland is a whole different world, and the Gold Coast’s best kept secret.
