Buenos Aires Travel Guide & Map

What to expect in Buenos Aires

Argentina's capital is big and beautiful. Its past was turbulent, its influences have been many, and today's city can best be described as cosmopolitan. You'll find strong Latin and other European influences here, but an exotic, exuberant and wholly South American heart.

When to visit Buenos Aires

When to go to Buenos Aires?
The seasons match Australia's - and spring (September-November) or autumn (March-May) are the best times to visit. Summer (December-March) is hot, humid and rainy but the city is quiet at this time, which has obvious advantages. Depending on where you come from, winter can be classed as cold or temperate. Winter is dry and sunny, cool to cold, and the football season is in full swing (this begins during autumn).

Insider Tips

If you're hoping to tango, buy the Tango Map from any tourist information centre. Heading to a milonga? Locals arrive around midnight, so to see them in action you'll need to allow for a long, late night. Free tours are sometimes available at Casa Rosada. Ask about them when you're there. Caminito, "the world's first outdoor pedestrian museum" - is touristy and charming but best seen in a group; give it a miss if you're alone. Taxi drivers don't expect tips, but they do round your fare up to the nearest peso. Buy a five-ride or ten-ride ticket for the subway; it'll save you time and money. Watch out for pickpockets during rush hour on public transport. Don't even dream of driving through this city; the traffic is a nightmare. Use the easily identifiable Radio Taxis, if you're stopping a cab in the street. Meateaters only: dine at La Cabana steakhouse. Vegetarians, don't even go there! Buenos Aires' streets are very long; ask for the nearest intersection if you're trying to pinpoint an address.
