What to expect

When to go

Summer is a great time to visit Amsterdam, when you can bathe in the sunshine by the canals and marvel at the beautiful galleries and museums. To avoid the crowds, try the city in winter, when the streets and museums are quiet – if the weather gets cold enough see the famous canals turned into giant ice rinks enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. In spring, when the bulb fields are in bloom, the city comes alive with colour and vibrancy.

Insider tips

Nieuwmarket, with its own medieval city gate is the perfect location to relax and enjoy the many terraced cafés Amsterdam offers.
Arguably the best way to see Amsterdam is on one of the many Canal cruises, and the “hop on, hop off” option makes this a novel and practical way of getting around.
If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets then head to the Begijnhof, a courtyard of peace and tranquillity behind the Spui shopping street.
