What to expect

When to go

London's seasons don't count for a whole lot, so be prepared for all conditions at any time of year. However, January through to March can be especially bitter, while the summer sees a huge influx of people and the streets and public transport can get sticky and crowded. The run up to Christmas can also be hectic. This makes spring and autumn ideal times to visit the city.

Insider tips

Oxford Street and Leicester Square can get extremely crowded and are generally over-priced - they are best avoided.
Looking to do London on the cheap? Many of the city's galleries and museums are free (though donations are welcomed).
London is best seen by foot or by bus, though the area covered by the city is huge, so plan your route in advance if you can.
