Slanted Door

In 2004 chef-owner Charles Phan, who has gained national fame with his upmarket, Western-accented Vietnamese fare, moved the Slanted Door into the busy Ferry Building, where it occupies a large space outfitted with sleek wooden tables and chairs, a cocktail lounge and bar, and a big bay view. (At this writing, he plans to expand the original Mission District location into a casual noodle restaurant, slated to open by 2005.) Phan's popular dishes -- crispy sweet-and-sour whole fish, clay-pot chicken with chilies and ginger, shaking beef (tender beef cubes with garlic and onion), green papaya salad -- made the move, too, to the cheers of his faithful customers.
