In a historic colonnaded building with handsome Works Project Administration-produced murals depicting San Francisco in the mid-1930s, the Beach Chalet is the place to watch the waves break on the shore and the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. The fine microbrewery beers run the gamut from a light pilsner to a pale ale, but the dinner menu -- barbecued baby back ribs, grilled salmon, fried calamari -- seldom produces more-than-okay food. At midday, the prices are lower, the food simpler, and the view, albeit minus the sunset, better. Good local bands, from blues to rock, play nightly in the bar.
