Hermès Hermès was established as a saddlery in 1837 and went on to create the eternally chic Kelly (named for Grace Kelly) and Birkin (named for Jane Birkin) handbags. The magnificent silk scarves are legendary for their rich colors and intricate designs, which change yearly. Other accessories may not have waiting lists but are extremely covetable: enamel bracelets, intricately patterned silk twill ties, small leather goods. In spring 2004 Jean-Paul Gaultier showed his first women's wear collection for Hermès, and it was a stunner, pulling Hermès's dressage past into the present with luxe materials and dashing silhouettes. During semiannual sales, in January and July, prices are slashed by up to 50%, and the crowds line up for blocks. Métro: Concorde. Other location: 42 av.
