South Coast Plaza

Costa Mesa's most famous landmark, South Coast Plaza, is an immense complex that's gotten ritzier by the year as designer boutiques jostle for platinum-card space. The original section has the densest concentration of luxe: Gucci, Armani, Burberry, La Perla, Hermès, Versace, and Prada are just a few of the shops here. The usual moderately priced mall chains are here, too, from Sunglass Hut to Banana Republic. One standout is the excellent Book Soup bookstore. Major department stores, including Saks and Nordstrom, flank the exterior. A pedestrian bridge crosses Bear Street to the second wing, a smaller offshoot with a huge Crate & Barrel.
