Tucked between mirrored-glass office towers near the Performing Arts Center is the California Scenario, a 1½-acre sculpture garden designed by Isamu Noguchi, who carved this compact space into distinct areas with his abstract designs. Each represents an aspect of the state's terrain. Smooth granite boulders punctuate the sweep of flat stone paving. A pine tree-trimmed grassy slope faces a circular area planted with cacti, while a sunken stream curls towards a low stone pyramid. The garden can be hard to find; it's a block from the South Coast Repertory Theater, by the El Torito restaurant.
