The Cloisters Perched atop a wooded hill in Fort Tryon Park, near Manhattan's northernmost tip, the Cloisters houses the medieval collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in an appropriately medieval monastery-like setting. Colonnaded walks connect authentic French and Spanish monastic cloisters, a French Romanesque chapel, a 12th-century chapter house, and a Romanesque apse. An entire room is devoted to the richly woven and extraordinarily detailed 15th- and 16th-century Unicorn Tapestries -- a must-see. Three enchanting gardens shelter more than 250 species of plants similar to those grown during the Middle Ages, including herbs and medicinals; the Unicorn Garden blooms with flowers and plants depicted in the tapestries. Concerts of medieval music are held here regularly, and an outdoor café decorated with 15th-century carvings serves biscotti and espresso (May-October). COST: $12 suggested donation. Subway: A to 190th St. Bus: the M4 Cloisters-Fort Tryon Park bus provides a lengthy but scenic ride; catch it along Madison Avenue below West 110th Street, or on Broadway above West 110th Street.
