Museum of the City of New York Unique aspects of the city are drawn together in this massive Georgian mansion built in 1930. From the Dutch settlers of Nieuw Amsterdam to the present day, with period rooms, dioramas, films, prints, paintings, sculpture, and clever displays of memorabilia, this museum's got it all. An exhibit on Broadway illuminates the history of American theater with costumes, set designs, and period photographs; the noteworthy toy gallery has several meticulously detailed dollhouses. Maps, nautical artifacts, Currier & Ives lithographs, and furniture collections constitute the rest of the museum's permanent displays. Changing exhibits explore various aspects of the city's culture, neighborhoods, history, art, and architecture. The museum also hosts New York-centric lectures, films, and walking tours. Weekend programs are oriented especially for kids. COST: $7 suggested donation.
