El Museo del Barrio

El barrio is Spanish for "the neighborhood," and the museum, focusing on Latin American and Caribbean art, is fittingly located on the edge of East Harlem, where a largely Spanish-speaking, Puerto Rican and Dominican community resides. Founded in 1969, the 8,000-object permanent collection includes numerous pre-Columbian artifacts, sculpture, film and video, and the museum's well-known santos, or saints -- carved wooden folk-art figures from Puerto Rico. COST: $6 suggested donation. Subway: 6 to 103rd St.
