Dahesh Museum of Art

The Dahesh reopened in this new location in 2003 as an expanded museum of European academic art. Its collection is composed of 3,000 works donated by a Lebanese doctor named Dahesh (1909-84). The new museum (it was formerly tucked in a little-known second-floor exhibition space on 5th Avenue at 49th Street) houses an expanded shop, auditorium, Internet spaces, and an afternoon tearoom. Among the well-known painters represented are Bonheur, Bouguereau, Gérôme, and Troyon -- all painters who have since been upstaged by their contemporaries, the impressionists, but who once claimed greater popularity. COST: $9. Subway: E, V to 5th Ave./53rd St.
