Grant's Tomb

This commanding position along the Hudson River, within Riverside Park, is the final resting place of Civil War general and two-term president Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia Dent Grant. Opened in 1897, almost 12 years after Grant's death, it was a more popular sight than the Statue of Liberty until the end of World War I. The towering granite tomb, the largest mausoleum in North America, is engraved with the words let us have peace, recalling Grant's speech to the Republican convention upon his presidential nomination. Under a small white dome, the Grants' twin black-marble sarcophagi are sunk into a deep circular chamber visible from above; minigalleries to the sides display photographs and Grant memorabilia. COST: Free. Subway: 1, 9 to 125th St.
