Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture

The New York Public Library's Division of Negro Literature, History, and Prints first gained acclaim in 1926 when it acquired the vast collection of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, a black scholar of Puerto Rican descent. Schomburg was curator in 1932-38, and, in 1940, when Schomburg died, the collection of more than 10,000 books, documents, paintings, and photographs recording black history was renamed in his honor. Later designated a research library, the ever-growing collection moved in 1980 into this modern redbrick building from the handsome Victorian next door (designed by McKim, Mead & White), which is now an exhibit hall. COST: Free. Subway: 2, 3 to 135th St.
