Brooklyn Borough Hall

Built in 1848, this Greek revival landmark is arguably Brooklyn's handsomest building. The hammered-brass top of the cast-iron cupola (a successor to the original wooden one, which burned in 1895) was restored by the same French craftsmen who restored the Statue of Liberty. The stately building is adorned with Tuckahoe marble both inside and out; other highlights are the square rotunda and the two-story beaux arts-style courtroom with plaster columns painted to look like wood. Today the hall serves as the office of Brooklyn's borough president. On Tuesday and Saturday a green market sets up on the flagstone plaza in front. COST: Free. Subway: 2, 3, 4, 5 to Borough Hall; R, W to Court St.
