Century 21

For many New Yorkers, this is the mother lode of discount shopping, and they remained loyal when the store reopened after September 11. Four large floors are crammed with everything from J. P. Tod's driving moccasins to Ralph Lauren bedding -- on a good day it may seem to lack nothing but a private dressing room. The rows of half-price ties, designer briefs, and shoes are most appealing in the men's merchandise. Scouring the full floor of women's designer clothing can turn up such deals as a Dolce & Gabbana suit for about $370 or Vera Wang silk tops for less than $150. Don't pass up lingerie, where you can find La Perla lace. The basement linens department has choice buys on pure cotton sheets and wool blankets, but watch for irregular stickers. There's also a collection of name-brand luggage, from gym bags to rolling suitcases. Cosmetics are the only goods not directly discounted, but a purchase elicits coupons good for deductions on other store merchandise. Subway: R, W to Cortlandt St.
