Gotham Book Mart

The late Frances Steloff opened this store in 1920 with just $200 in her pocket, half of it on loan. But she helped launch James Joyce's Ulysses, D. H. Lawrence, and Henry Miller and is now legendary among bibliophiles -- as is her bookstore. There's a wealth of signed editions of deliciously macabre Edward Gorey books. Subway: B, D, F, V to 47th-50th Sts./Rockefeller Center.
