The Half King

Perfect Storm author Sebastian Junger and his writer friends opened this low-key Irish pub so people could hang out, meet friends, drink pints, and eat hearty Irish food. Chelsea desperately needed such a down-to-earth place amidst the chic galleries and trendy bistros, and Half King succeeds in its mission. The pub has large booths, friendly service, plenty of beer on tap, and inexpensive dishes served in generous portions. As you'd expect, potatoes and cabbage are given a prominent role on the menu; there are also lamb, roast pork, steak, and fish-and-chips. Subway: C, E to 23rd St.
