Café Luxembourg

Lively and sophisticated Café Luxembourg has a definite downtown vibe, rare among the restaurants in this low-key neighborhood. It's a terrific spot for a meal after visiting nearby Lincoln Center, and as a result the dining room is often crowded. The menu includes classic bistro dishes such as steak au poivre alongside somewhat more contemporary spins like sea scallops with mint-green pea flan, morel mushrooms, and truffle vinaigrette. There's also a decent selection of wines. Reservations essential. Subway: 1, 2, 3, 9 to 72nd St.
